The mouse wheel does not work - what should I do?

One of the most common problems with a computer mouse is a broken scroll wheel. Scrolling is an indispensable tool in browsing the Internet, allowing you to zoom in or out, etc. If the wheel breaks, the scroll does not work well, stops scrolling or starts skipping forward - backward, you can try to figure out the cause of the malfunction yourself.Faced with a scrolling problem, do not rush to throw the mouse away; there are various troubleshooting options.

Why does the mouse wheel not work and what to do?

Today, the wheel is an integral part of a modern computer mouse. It is almost always located in the middle of the device between the two main buttons. The main purpose is to scroll through web pages, pages of text documents, and also performs additional functions in games and other applications. In addition to scrolling, the wheel has the function of a third button.

If a mouse malfunction is detected, the first thing to do is check the installed drivers. Drivers - software with which the device interacts with a computer. Mostly mouse drivers are installed by default. However, in some cases, when the mice have auxiliary functions (buttons), it is necessary to additionally install a driver, which should be included with the device. It is possible to find out the performance of the software through the "device manager", the transition is as follows: "START" - "Control Panel". If there is no driver on the computer, a question mark will appear next to the device.

IMPORTANT. The display of icons in the control panel is configured by category by default. To display all the shortcuts in the upper right corner in the "View" option, select "Large Icons" or "Small Icons".

REFERENCE. To quickly switch to "Device Manager", you need to simultaneously press the "WIN" + "R" keys on the keyboard, then enter the following "devmgmt.msc", then click "OK".

In addition to the driver, you must check the operability of the USB port. Check as follows:

  1. Check if the indicator on it is on.
  2. Check USB port with another device.
  3. Check the mouse on another computer.

If the mouse breaks down, it is recommended to replace it, because repairs in the service will cost no cheaper than a new one, and independent repairs require a waste of time and effort. A broken wheel may be due to improperly configured mouse settings.

To view the parameters, you need to go to the mouse section through the "Control Panel". In the Mouse Properties dialog box, on the Wheel tab, view the number of lines parameter for vertical and horizontal scrolling. Each user of the value of this parameter is individually configured, because someone is comfortable scrolling half the page with one movement, and one line is enough for the other.

Also, the cause of excessive jerking of the mouse pointer on the desktop may be the disabled function of "increased accuracy of the pointer." To view the parameter, go to the "Index Options" tab in the "Properties: Mouse" dialog box.

Temporarily without a mouse wheel, you can do as follows:

  1. There are special buttons on the keyboard: "PgUp" (Page Up - Page up) and "PgDn" (Page Down - Page down). These keys will allow you to scroll to the next or previous page.
  2. When browsing the Internet, you can use the Space bar, which allows you to scroll down the page. The keyboard shortcut "Shift" + "Space" - scrolls the page up.
  3. If only the wheel does not function on the device, then using the slider you can scroll the page.

How to fix a wheel on a mouse?

The main factor of the idle wheel is improperly installed software. At the initial signs of malfunctions, try connecting the mouse to another computer, if the device works, then the cause of the malfunction is in the device settings.

Pages do not scroll

If, while working in a text editor or while browsing, it is found that the pages do not respond to scrolling in any way, then you need to check the settings:

  • View device properties;
  • On the Wheel tab, set the desired scroll value.

The next thing to do is reinstall the drivers. To do this, in the "Device Manager" double-click on the device and select the update command.

REFERENCE. In some cases, you need to uninstall the driver and reinstall it.

If pressing and scrolling up and down does not work

It is possible to find out the cause of the malfunction by disassembling the device.

  1. Remove the protective stickers and linings by loosening the fixing screws.
  2. Loosen screws and remove housing.
  3. Visually inspect the contents of the device for integrity, pay special attention to the scroll mechanism.

The most common failure is the axis of the mechanism. It is possible to repair it with a metal paper clip, you will also need a lighter or any other source of fire. Then you need to take measurements from the broken axis. Cut a piece of wire from the paper clip 2 mm longer than the length obtained. After that, one of the sides of the wire is heated to red and immediately put in place of the broken axis. Wait until the wire is soldered to the wheel. Assemble the mechanism without a case, and check the mouse for functionality. If everything functions correctly, assemble the mouse completely.

If the pages "jump"

When browsing web pages or any other electronic document, the page scrolls jerkyly or randomly “skips”, then the problem that arose is most likely related to the functionality of the touch sensor. To eliminate the breakdown, you must:

  1. Disassemble the device.
  2. Remove the housing as well as the scroll mechanism.
  3. As a rule, the sensor is pressed against the wheel with four petals - carefully bend them.
  4. Pull out the clamping mechanism and wipe it with an alcohol solution.
  5. With a flat screwdriver, make a dent in the clamping part.
  6. Assemble the mouse in reverse order and check.

If after checking the malfunction remains, then it is necessary to change or take the device to service.

The wheel does not spin and rattles

When scrolling the wheel is very difficult or not spinning at all, as well as in cases where there is noise inside the mouse body, these are signs of a hardware malfunction. First of all, it is necessary to lubricate the scroll mechanism by removing the device case.

REFERENCE. The scrolling mechanism must be lubricated with silicone grease.

In some cases, it is necessary to replace the pressure tabs. Replace as follows:

  1. Disassemble the mouse and remove the wheel.
  2. Remove the petals.
  3. Using copper wire, make 4 clamps.
  4. Install / solder clamps instead of petals.
  5. Assemble a mouse.

IMPORTANT. Any interference with the design of the device removes the product from warranty service.

Pressing the wheel does not work

In the case when the wheel scrolls the pages, but the computer does not respond to pressing. The first thing to check is the clicks when you click on the button. If the sound of clicks is present, then the problem is most likely the software. To check the settings you need:

  1. Open the hotkey program (AutoHotkey, SlickRun, Qliner Hotkeys).
  2. View the assigned key by clicking on the wheel.

REFERENCE. If the button function on the wheel does not work in some programs, then the reason is in the program settings.
