HDCP, what is it in the monitor?

Abbreviations such as HDCP confuse the layman who are not versed in high technology. HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) is a protection protocol used in data transfer. Simply put, this is a complete protection of user information from copying, in which multistage access is used. It was introduced by Intel Corporation - the largest manufacturer of electronic equipment and components.

The HDCP in the monitor protects data from unauthorized access. In simple terms, the transmission and output of all video data on the screen field is carried out due to a certain set of keys. They also encrypt the transmitted information, preventing the creation of an accidental data leak.

The main task is to prevent the transfer of unencrypted data. For this purpose, the protocol is additionally equipped with three systems:

  1. Authentication All devices are registered on the network, preventing other devices from connecting and gaining access to content. For example, if a TV and computer are connected, then another TV receiver cannot be connected without prior approval.
  2. Encryption of all transmitted data. Excludes copying, catching the signal (even random) and performs other functions.
  3. Cancellation of keys. This protection method also allows you to stop and block the transfer of specific content to devices that have not received a license to use the technology.

A standard device has a minimum of 56 keys. When connecting (authentication), the TV and the receiver exchange these secret keys, accumulating them. The security protocol is designed so that these keys for encryption are random for each device, and are generated during transmission. However, they accumulate, in contrast to the new technology.

HDCP encrypts using an analog stream, which is supplied in a randomly encrypted form. A 24-bit number is randomly generated, a key change is pre-embedded in the algorithm, which only increases the protection against data copying. They change with every frame change.

Of course, the main area of ​​use will be devices that support high-quality video and audio streams. These include all modern TV models. In addition, the application allows for a personal computer and even a laptop. However, the technical specifications of the device should be considered. For example, there are two main factors - video card support and the availability of software on the computer.

What happens if the device does not accept HDCP?

Many users in the modern world think about protecting information. Therefore, they are studying similar ways to protect themselves and materials. However, their devices may not be compatible with HDCP, as this is one of the relatively new developments.

Unfortunately, this problem cannot be fixed. A simple example is a blu-ray player with protocol support and a TV without protocol support when connected will produce the following options:

  • lack of image;
  • the picture will be greatly distorted;
  • warning notice of inappropriate equipment.

To apply the protocol in the end you need to have a transmitter and a receiver right away. They are different from each other. The transmitters include playback devices - players, video cards, computers. And to the receivers - a TV and a monitor, - image output devices. The protocol will work only if support is provided on both devices.

To find out whether the device supports this technology is quite simple: by checking the technical documentation. If it was not possible to find in the parameters, you need to turn to the search via the Internet. But the easiest way to determine if data protection protocol support is available is to find a special sticker. The HD ready logo is usually featured on all new devices. If it is, then technology support is licensed.
